Family members of steamboat inventor Robert Fulton were among early settlers to Rising Sun. The 1830s and 40s saw steamboats built here. Each spring, 300 to 400 flatboats loaded with locally produced farm machinery left for southern ports.
Shipping and manufacturing declined but the businesses of the Whitlock family remained. They were known for their fine furniture, lumberyard, 1st coin-operated music player/game machine, hydroplane and first electric chair. “Row” Whitlock’s Hoosier Boy hydroplane record between Cincinnati & Louisville still stands today and can be viewed at the Ohio County Historical Museum.
Take a leisurely stroll through town starting at the longest continually used courthouse in the State. Stop on Main St. to visit Harps on Main, Zeiler Music Center, Pendleton Art Center. You’ll also find several outstanding restaurants, antique, gift, curio and wine shops waiting your visit. End your walk at the newly constructed pavilion, fountain and sea wall where you can watch boats come in at the public boat dock carrying additional visitors to our Rising Sun.
